Certain information about the loans you take out is collected by central credit information agencies. A financial services company will check your creditworthiness (borrowing capacity) and then decide whether you can be granted a new loan.
Creditworthiness check
Certain personal details relating to the so-called consumer loans that you take out are collected by the central credit information office in accordance with legal requirements. It registers data on credit and leasing transactions for private purposes in accordance with the Consumer Credit Act (KKG). In accordance with legal requirements, the financial services company is obliged to check your creditworthiness and then decide whether a loan can be granted to you.
Reporting obligation of the creditor
Lenders are not only obliged to report the granting of consumer credit to the credit information agency, but also, for example, if a customer is in arrears with repayments.
Secure your good reputation
- Draw up a budget that suits you. Take into account all expenses, especially the fixed ones, but also the variable ones such as going out, gifts, spontaneous purchases etc. Do not lightly assume that you will tighten your belt during the term of the loan without further ado.
- Be honest with yourself: Can you really afford the consumption you want to finance with the loan?
- Also try to anticipate what changes your budget might suffer over the life of the loan. Is your job secure? Is the joint household with your partner likely to survive the term of the loan or are there already serious signs of crisis? Will a child be born during the term of the loan?
- Pay at least the agreed minimum instalments - higher instalments are of course always possible.
- If your financial situation changes to your disadvantage and you can no longer meet your obligations, it is best to tell your lenders immediately or contact a debt counselling service.
